How important is Blood Glucose Monitoring and Control

How important is Blood Glucose Monitoring and Control?

0

A person when diagnosed with diabetes initially suffers disbelief and as an after effect of that shock tries to take precautions and follows extra measures to control blood glucose. But as the time elapses the precautions might become slack leading to poor control over blood glucose. Various studies indicate that a diabetic with good control over blood glucose with proper diet and regular glucose monitoring has lesser hospital trips and suffers lesser diabetes related complications. Lots of complications have been attached with poor blood glucose management amongst diabetics. These complications can be life threatening and can also decrease the quality of life of a person. Awareness about the complications and their symptoms can prevent the condition from taking a deadly shape.

  • Nephropathy: Diabetic nephropathy is kidney damage which results as a complication of uncontrolled diabetes in combination with high blood pressure. High blood glucose over a long period of time can damage the structural units of kidneys, nephrons leading to the symptoms like: frothing of urine, protein in urine, generalized itching, swollen legs, poor appetite, etc. Best way to prevent or control kidney damage is to control BP and blood glucose. A low protein diet is recommended in advanced cases.
  • Neuropathy: Nerves are damaged as a result of high blood sugar levels and this damage is more likely if the blood sugar is not controlled. Approximately 50% of people with diabetes eventually develop nerve damage. The symptoms of neuropathy are seen in all the systems of body like constipation, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, difficulty in swallowing, deep pain, most commonly in the feet and legs, muscle cramps, numbness, tingling or burning sensation in the extremities (particularly the feet), drooping eyelids, light-headedness when standing up, etc. The symptoms vary depending on the nerve which is affected. After initial symptoms develop it is important to control the blood glucose to prevent worsening of symptoms e.g. loss of sensation can push you towards other complications as diabetic foot.
  • Hypoglycaemia: It is also known as low blood glucose. It occurs when blood glucose level drops too low to provide enough energy for body’s activities. The symptoms include: hunger, nervousness, shakiness, perspiration, light-headedness, sleepiness, anxiety, weakness, etc. Hypoglycemia can be caused when meals taken are too smaller than required, delayed or skipped. Even when a person accidentally takes excessive dose of insulin or some diabetes medications, or does extra physical activity than usual.

What to do in HypoglycemiaIn case of above symptoms, use a blood glucose meter to check the glucose level. If it is 70 mg/dL or below, have either of these foods to raise your blood glucose: 2-3 teaspoon glucose, ½ cup fruit juice, 5-6 pieces of hard candies, 1-2 teaspoon sugar or honey. Check your blood glucose again after 15 minutes, if it is still low have another serving of the above mentioned foods till the blood glucose reaches 70mg/ dL. Thus, if you are on insulin or any diabetes medications always carry one of the above mentioned foods with you.

Everything You Need to Know About Cancer Basics

Everything You Need to Know About Cancer Basics

The word Cancer generates anxiety in many people along with a sense of fear for this deadly disease which is directly considered a ‘Sure Cause of Death’. No doubt cancer is one of deadliest diseases but that does not mean, at all, that cancer can’t be cured. An early detection of this horrible disease not only can help in getting rid of this disease completely. In simple words, majority of times, cancer is completely curable if detected at early stages. In this blog, you’ll learn about cancer and its various types, their general conditions in India and cure by going through:

  1. Cancer- All about it and why does it happen
  2. General conditions of all types of Cancer in India
  3. Curing cancer

Let’s talk about Cancer-What it is and why does it happen?

Cancer itself incorporates about 100 diseases. Cancer, in generally, is a class of syndromes that are characterized by  ‘out of control’ growth of cells in human body. In general, there are more than 100 types of cancer existing in the world and every type is characterized by the kind of body cell that it affects.  In simple words, cancer can be defined as the diseases occurring due to unregulated growth of human body cells.

How does it occur?

Cancer occurs when human body cells start dividing hysterically in an unregulated manner and start forming some masses or lumps of tissue in body. These lumps are termed as tumors (unlike leukemia, where cancer proscribes standard blood function in the body’s blood stream by irregular cell division). These lumps can grow while interfering with the circulatory, nervous and digestive systems of the body which results into releasing some special type of hormones that affects badly the body function.

General conditions and symptoms of Cancer:

The general conditions and symptoms of major cancer types in India are as follows -

Breast Cancer –

  • A painless lump or a bump in the breast area or underarm. These appear  after the menstrual cycle and is perhaps the first apparent noticeable condition of breast cancer.
  • Tenderness with pain in the breast
  • Unusual swelling in the armpit
  • A noticeable indentation or flattening on the breast
  • Any change in contour, size, temperature or even texture of the breasts.
  • A marble like area under skin.
  • An area that is specifically dissimilar from any other area on breasts.
  • Abnormal discharge from the breast’s nipple that may be clear, colored  or even bloody
  • Unusual  itching, retraction, a burning sensation or dimpling or even ulceration in nipple.

Leukemia –

  • Irregular weight loss
  • Constant weakness or tiredness
  • Loss of appetite
  • Swollen lymph nodes in the neck, armpit, or groin
  • Constant fever
  • Night sweats
  • Bleeding or bruising
  • Constant headaches
  • Joint or bone pains
  • Painful swollen belly

Oral Cancer –

  • A red or white patch in mouth
  • An irritation or sore or lump with thick patch in the lip or mouth or throat
  • Difficulty in swallowing or chewing
  • Numbness in the tongue along with some other areas of the mouth
  • Difficulty in moving the tongue or jaw
  • Swelling in some areas of the jaw
  • Pain in one ear but without any hearing loss

 Skin Cancer –

  • A waxy or pearly bump
  • A flat lesion with a scaly, crusted surface
  • A red firm nodule
  • A big brownish spot having darker speckles
  • A mole that changes in size or color or start giving a feel or bleeds
  • A tiny lesion with an asymmetrical border that appear blue-black, white, red or blue
  • Dark lesions on your soles, palms, toes, nose, fingertips, mouth or vagina
  • A flat brown scar or flesh-colored lesion

Curing Cancer

For the treatment of cancer, two factors are into consideration.

  1. Age of the person
  2. Severity of cancer

The  treatment of cancer involves three steps depending on the stage of cancer a patient has reached.

Surgery – This is the primary treatment that is used to remove the tumor physically by a surgery. This process may further involve chemotherapy.

Chemotherapy – If a person’s cancer is not at highly advanced stage to go for surgery, they are suggested only chemotherapy along with medication where the tumor cells are burnt with the help of radiations. Chemotherapy is also given to cancer patients who have underwent surgery to prevent further growth of tumor.

Palliative Care – This treatment is associated with improving the ‘quality of life’ of patients instead of focusing treating the cancer. This is given to the patients who are on the final stage of cancer and no treatment can treat their cancer.

Cancer has been associated with so many myths and for a layman it is a disease of certain death. But this is not true since proper care and timely treatment can help a patient fight this disease. Moreover doctors suggest that a healthy lifestyle with proper exercise and diet significantly lowers the chances of cancer to a great extent.

All about Cholesterol

All about Cholesterol

Good cholesterol, bad cholesterol, high cholesterol, low cholesterol- talking about cholesterol seems to be the latest trend. Amidst the ever-changing urban lifestyle, it is essential that we keep a tab on signs and symptoms of cholesterol. And more importantly, we take measures to keep it under control before the problem becomes difficult to manage. But before that, one must be aware of what actually cholesterol is, how it affects your body, the signs and symptoms to look out for and the cure. In this article we shall talk about all these aspects.

The basics

Cholesterol is a lipid molecule that is produced by the liver and is essential for the functioning of the human body. Each and every cell in the human body has an outer layer of cholesterol. You may be surprised to know that cholesterol isn’t bad itself, rather it is one of the many important substances that are required to keep the body healthy.

Types

Before understanding the types of cholesterol, it is essential to know that cholesterol is carried in the blood by lipoproteins (a complex compound containing both lipids and proteins). The three main types are – high density lipoproteins (good cholesterol), low density lipoproteins (bad cholesterol) and triglycerides.

HDL – it is due to the presence of HDL that your heart stays healthy and that is the reason that HDL is referred to as good cholesterol. HDL constantly works to carry the cholesterol back to the liver away from the cells. In the liver, the cholesterol is either broken down or excreted as a waste.

LDL – it is LDL that carries the cholesterol from the liver to the cells. There are chances that your body may transport an amount exceeding the normal which can be a matter of concern. If too much LDL is circulated in the blood, it would slowly start depositing along the inner walls of the arteries connecting the heart and the brain. Over a prolonged period, this deposit would turn into a thick layer and block the arteries. As a result, a clot would be formed, leading to stroke or heart attack.

Triglycerides –a type of fat found in the blood plasma of your body. Triglycerides in plasma come from either fat in the food you eat, or they are made in the body from other energy sources like carbs.

Functions

Given below are some of the main functions that cholesterol serves –

  • It helps in building and maintaining the cell membranes (outer layer of the cells)
  • It prevents crystallization of hydrocarbons in cells
  • It is an essential molecule for the synthesis of bile acids, vitamin D and steroid hormones
  • It converts the energy from sunlight into vitamin D in your body
  • It assists the body in bile production
  • It is involved in production of sex hormones – androgens and estrogens
  • Helps provide insulation to the nerve fibres
  • It is essential for the metabolism of fat soluble vitamins namely A, D, E and K

Signs and Symptoms

The signs and symptoms of high cholesterol level stealthily creep up without making you notice any substantial change in your normal body functioning. There are no particular external signs that can warn you of an increased cholesterol level and by the time you realize that might be the case, the cholesterol might well be blocking your arteries to create a biological commotion in your body.

The best way to judge is to get a regular health check-up and to ask your doctor to perform a cholesterol check.

Causes of High Cholesterol

There can be a number of causes that can be the reason of high cholesterol. Some of the most common ones are –

  • Smoking
  • Obesity
  • Being inactive or lack of exercise
  • Genetic make-up
  • Unhealthy eating habits
  • Family history

Eating a diet that has high amount of saturated fat (meat, egg yolk, butter, ghee, cheese) and trans fat (packaged foods like cookies, cakes, chips etc.) may put you at an increased risk of high cholesterol.

Diagnosis

Cholesterol levels in your body are measured by a blood test. The levels are categorized in mg/dl (milligrams/decilitre)

High cholesterol – 240 mg/dl or above

Borderline high cholesterol – 200-239 mg/dl

Normal Range – less than 200 mg/dl

Treatment and Prevention

For starters, one should switch to a healthy lifestyle comprising healthy eating and exercising. Do whatever you like, walk, run, swim or cycle but make sure you do get yourself some heavy breathing in a day. The next step is to avoid the use of tobacco. If a person has high cholesterol levels due to genetic make-up or family history, then lifestyle changes alone would not help. The doctor might prescribe some cholesterol lowering medication depending on various factors like age, cholesterol level, other diseases etc.

Seek your doctor’s advice on cholesterol because they’d know better about your condition. Even a small step would lead to healthy changes, so put on those walking shoes and take the first step towards a healthy life.

Diet Therapy in Diabetes

Diet Therapy in Diabetes

0
diet-therapy-diabetes

When it comes to managing diabetes, diet plays a fairly important role in doing so. A person who is capable of managing diabetes prevents himself from most of the diabetes related complications effectively like diabetes foot, retinopathy (retina related disorders), etc. Knowledge about the foods which we eat goes a long way in managing diabetes. Most important category of foods to be managed is the foods which primarily provide carbohydrates. Any carbohydrate which gets digested and absorbed in the blood stream increases blood glucose, needs to be managed the most in diabetes.

Following are the essential points of considerations in planning a diabetic diet:

  1. Determining energy requirements
  2. Distribution of energy in terms of carbohydrates, fat and protein
  3. Determining the type of carbohydrate, fibre and the type of preparation
  4. Distribution of carbohydrate in the entire day
  5. Stage of diabetes with the absence or presence of any complication

Determining Energy Requirements

  • Appropriate intake for acceptable body weight
  • Lower-calorie diets recommended for overweight people with diabetes
  • Increased-energy diets recommended:  during pregnancy, lactation, recovery from severe and prolonged illness

Note: Energy requirements need to be based on weight and insulin intake.

Distribution of energy

Protein: 10-20% of total energy per day

  • Higher amounts not encouraged for people with diabetes
  • Animal protein often high in fat, especially saturated
  • Vegetable protein sources should be encouraged – lower in fat

Carbohydrates:  should mainly come from whole grains: whole wheat and products, rice, alternate cereals like barley, oats, legumes, beans, pulses, allowed fruit and vegetables

  • Even distribution of carbohydrate over the day is important for good control of blood sugar levels
  • Foods with low glycemic index to be included in the diet (more details on glycemic index will be provided in subsequent articles)
  • Intake of large quantities of carbohydrate foods in main meals and little (or none) between meals increases the risk of excessive fluctuations in blood sugar levels
  • It is better to eat smaller amounts of food more frequently as this results in more even blood glucose levels

Fat:  Daily fat intake should not exceed 15% of total energy intake; the oils selected should be high in monounsaturated fats (Olive oil, Canola oil, Rice Bran oil, Til oil), moderate in n-3 and n-6 fatty acids (mustard oil, sunflower oil, safflower oil) and low in saturated fats and hydrogenated fat.

  • Intake of cholesterol should be restricted
  • People with diabetes should consume less than 250 mg of cholesterol a day
  • Minimizing consumption of saturated fat (ghee, butter, coconut oil) will help decrease cholesterol

Fibre: Recommended amounts of fibre for people with diabetes is similar to those for the non-diabetics i.e. 20-35 g per day

Sodium: Daily sodium intake should not exceed 2400 mg

  • Salt intake should be restricted in hypertension, heart disease, kidney failure
  • Diet should be based on fresh foods as processed and preserved foods also contain fairly high levels of sodium (like ketchups, ready to eat foods, etc)

Sweeteners: Acceptable Daily Intake defined as the amount of a food additive that can be safely consumed on a daily basis over a person’s lifetime without any adverse effects which is 50 mg/kg/body weight/day

Please give it a thought: Type 2 diabetesaccounts for 90% of total diabetes cases worldwide. It is largely preventable and pretty manageable. Lifestyle changes such as prudent diet, weight loss and moderate daily exercise reduces the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 28-36% (over 3 years) as indicated by following studies.

" epigastrium "|

LDL (Low Density lipoprotive)

(Very Low Density lipoprotive)|

,LDL-VLDL|
